About This Place

Situated in the heart of Long Lane, Telford, The Ugly Duckling is much more than your average neighborhood pub. This vibrant restaurant and cocktail bar offers a perfect blend of classic British comfort food with a refined twist, creating an inviting atmosphere where hearty meals meet memorable moments.

The cuisine here confidently celebrates traditional British flavors while elevating each dish with thoughtful detail and rich, satisfying textures. Signature dishes like the Beer Battered Fish & Chips boast a golden, crispy coat that gives way to flaky, tender fish inside—paired beautifully with an expertly poured ale beer for an authentically British experience. Equally compelling is their famed Steak and Ale Pie, served with creamy mashed potatoes and mushy peas drenched in a generous jug of rich gravy, conjuring warm, nostalgic comfort with every bite.

For those craving something a little more indulgent, the menu features standout choices like the Fillet of Beef Wellington accompanied by seasonal vegetables, and the juicy Sirloin Steak served alongside crisp chips and a fresh Caesar salad. Not to be overlooked, the Duck Breast offers a succulent, flavor-packed option that remains true to the restaurant’s namesake. Morning visitors will delight in the Full English Breakfast and American Breakfast spreads, setting the day off with hearty, satisfying classics.

The Ugly Duckling also shines as a cocktail destination, with unique concoctions such as the playful Bubblegum Martini adding a splash of fun and sophistication to the evening. Whether you’re unwinding after work or celebrating a special occasion, the expertly mixed drinks complement the robust food menu perfectly.

The dining environment here exudes a warm, welcoming charm—stylish yet unpretentious. As reviewer Paul Wheatley notes, while it may initially appear to be just another pub, The Ugly Duckling quickly reveals itself as something far more special: a cozy venue where the raised rims on plates cleverly prevent mishaps, and the friendly staff ensure you feel genuinely at home. Other patrons celebrate the atmosphere as “fantastic” with vibrant music during themed events like the RnB brunch, and outstanding service that consistently draws praise.

While you wait, tantalize your palate with freshly baked bread, mixed marinated olives, or Southern fried chicken bites—appetizers that set a promising tone for your main course. The menu’s variety also caters to grill lovers with options like the 10oz Ribeye, 8oz Fillet, and Mixed Grill, alongside lighter fare such as the Black & Blue Salad.

Customer testimonials paint a vivid picture of memorable dining experiences, from Fiona Nickless and her husband’s impression of a “wow” worthy Sunday lunch to Sally Wheatcroft’s recommendation following accommodating and attentive service during the busy Christmas season. These genuine reflections underline The Ugly Duckling’s commitment to delivering not just food, but a heartfelt experience.

For those seeking a place where classic flavors meet spirited hospitality, where every meal is prepared with care and every guest feels like family, The Ugly Duckling in Telford is a compelling choice. Whether you’re in for a traditional roast, a gourmet steak, or a signature cocktail, you’re in for a dining adventure that’s both comforting and delightfully fresh.

Get ready to indulge your senses and savor the warmth of this remarkable restaurant, bar, and cocktail haven.

People say this is a friendly convenient and warm venue for food and accommodation. Well I can't attest to the latter, the former most certainly delivered at some levels. Odd plates but actually sensible as you are less likely to lose your food over the edge of the plate as the rims are raised. Whilst at first it may look like just an ordinary pub it soon becomes clear that this is indeed so much more. Service with a smile? Perhaps not but efficiency is what this great country was built on and efficient we had. I did sense the server was losing patience with my date although she did take an inordinantly long time to choose a drink which frankly felt reminiscent of other times when we plan days out.

I had a really enjoyable visit to The Ugly Duck in Telford. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the décor is genuinely stunning, stylish without feeling pretentious, and perfect for a relaxed meal out. The food was very good: hearty, well-presented, and flavourful. From the beautifully plated dessert to the generous main, everything looked great and tasted just as good. Service was also solid throughout — friendly, attentive, and efficient without being intrusive. Overall, a great experience. I’d happily return and recommend The Ugly Duck for anyone looking for a cosy spot with good food and a great vibe.

A wayside inn, completely updated for the modern world, and full of mostly happy people. Loads of parking, but set near green lanes perfect for unwinding after a working day. The staff were welcoming too.

My partner and I visited the Ugly Duckling for the first time on Tuesday the 8 of October and had a very enjoyable brunch. The venue itself is very nice, clean, and well looked after. The waitress that served us was very nice and helpful so full marks to her. It's well worth a visit.
